Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack was a student of the Bauhaus School of Art following World War One. He left Germany due to the rise of Nazism, and arrived in Australia as an enemy alien on board the Dunera. He was rescued from Tatura Internment Camp in 1942 by Sir James Darling and came to GGS where, for the next 15 years, the Art School was enriched by his presence. In 1985, Hirschfeld-Mack’s widow, Olive Hirschfeld, donated several works to the school, including five woodblocks, carved c.1942–43, as well as signed prints made from the blocks by Hirschfeld-Mack. In 2005, 100 new prints from each block were drawn by master printmaker Stephan Glover and numbered. These were offered for sale to commemorate the sesquicentenary of the school. Several of these prints remain, which we are now pleased to offer for sale. No further prints will be drawn from the blocks. Funds raised will be put towards the Art School and especially the restoration of Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack’s frieze of the Life of Christ in the painting studio. Conservation treatment is needed to ensure this important and unique work of art is preserved for posterity. The available prints are [print size]: 1. 2. Cuthbertson House [207 x 152 mm] 3.
