Proposed Viva Energy Gas Terminal Project
Thursday, 24 October 2024

You can register your endorsement of the School's opposition to Viva Energy's proposed gas terminal project in Corio Bay.

Viva Energy is seeking approval from the Victorian Government for the operation of a gas terminal at Refinery Pier in Corio Bay. This project, if approved, would comprise the development of a gas terminal using a ship known as a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), adjacent to Viva Energy's Geelong Refinery. Alongside other members of the Geelong community, the School opposed the approval of this project in 2022 because of concerns about its impact on the marine environment, noise, air quality and cultural heritage. Following the School's advocacy, the Minister for Planning directed Viva Energy to prepare a Supplementary Environmental Effects Statement (Supplementary EES).

The School Seeks Your Support

The Supplementary EES provided Viva Energy with an opportunity to further demonstrate that its proposed location for the FSRU in Corio Bay was suitable and that any environmental impacts could be appropriately managed; however, the School does not consider Viva Energy's Supplementary EES adequately addresses the concerns raised in our initial submission. The School does not oppose that there may be a future need for gas availability to address potential shortages within Victoria; the School opposes the project proposed by Viva Energy in the environment of Corio Bay.

The School will continue to seek to safeguard the environment of Corio Bay and the protected Ramsar wetlands of Limeburners Lagoon, and to advocate for potential impacts of the project to be properly assessed. We are preparing a further submission to the Supplementary EES Process and the public hearings that will follow.
