2024 OGG Motoring Event
Wednesday, 18 December 2024

Thank you very much for taking part in running of the 13th OGG Motoring Event and contributing to its success. Entrants were welcomed at the GGS Equestrian Centre. We were joined by many regular entrants as well as some who were new to the event. Entrants received name tags, questions to be answered along the way and the "un-jumble the words" questions. After the drivers briefing, the cars were flagged away in perfect conditions.

Section 1 took entrants from Corio through Lara, past the You Yangs Regional Park, then past Mt Rothwell to Balliang East, on to Staughton Vale, through Anakie to Maude, and from there they drove on some of our favorite roads to Inverleigh via Shelford. The town of Inverleigh is at the junction of the Barwon River and the Leigh River. It is always a popular spot for the morning tea break, with the sheltered picnic area next to the Hotel a perfect spot for a cup of tea and a catch up. In a happy coincidence, GGS motoring family, Clive (M'85), Anna and Bobby Jamieson (M'19), just happened to be there when we arrived. They are planning to enter next year's event. Along the way, entrants answered questions and unjumbled some words.

This year, Section 2 was a transport stage to our lunch destination as the Pollocksford Road bridge over the Barwon River is closed for repairs. This blocked us from using some of the better roads in the district. Entrants arrived at our lunch and finishing point, Tony Blakeley's (M'77) beautiful property, Wormbete. Cars were parked on the lush emerald, green lawn in the walled courtyard where entrants set up to enjoy their picnic lunch and catch up with each other. Tony and his son Charlie kindly showed entrants through his historic homestead and around the wonderful grounds.

English cars once again dominated the entry list, with no less than seven Jaguars amongst the fleet, followed by one car from Germany, one car from the USA and from France - Peter Latreille's (Cu'62) magnificent 1924 Leon Bollee, which was celebrating its 100th birthday. We would all like to thank our hosts Tony Blakeley and son Charlie for their warm welcome, and son Tom for the preparation of the magnificent grounds.

On the Podium

In 3rd Place were first time entrants, Graeme and Angela Vaux, driving in their beautiful silver 1973 E Type Jaguar. Any that are actively involved in rallying and motor sport will have seen Graeme's name feature in the results on many occasions.

In 2nd Place, regular entrants and competitors in many forms of motor sport, Rob and Louise Ades (Crowther) in their wonderful supercharged 1955 ZA MG Magnette. This is the 4th time that they have stood on the podium in this event.

In 1st Place were David McKay (P'68) and Sally McKay (Pearce, Clyde '71), Michael Rowe (P'68) and Libby Kingdon, in David's wonderful 1968 Daimler Sovereign. This is the third occasion that they have stood on the podium.

Again, thank you to all entrants, particularly to those taking part for the first time. We encourage you to spread the word to any who you think may be interested in taking part next year. The 2025 OGG Motoring Event will be held on Sunday 9 November.

I would also like to thank Belinda Henry for her help in plotting the course, for scoring and collating the results, Simon Waters (FB'69) for course checking and Peter Black, Rob Ades and others that kindly sent me photos that you see in this report.

Happy Motoring.
