Barwon House Time Capsule
Thursday, 20 February 2025

On 19 December 2024, the School's Archivist, Darren Watson, received an unexpected email from the Grounds Supervisor. During improvement works, made possible by the Friends of Middle School, the Facilities Team discovered a time capsule. The contents revealed that, on 12 August 1987, the Barwon House boys filled a plastic container with notes and reflections from their time at School and placed it in a brick wall near their boarding house tennis courts. One tightly packed plastic wrapper turned out to be a noodle package and note by Magnus McCamish Yoshikawa (Timbertop '88), who declared that "This is what we had for Lunch/Because the food was allfull [sic]."

On learning that the time capsule had been discovered, Magnus had a good chuckle - particularly about his spelling - and confirmed that the noodles are still available for purchase today! While many of the other notes were destroyed due to weather or animal activity, it was a delight to find this unofficial time capsule, albeit 63 years earlier than one note advises it should've been. Jonathan Hutchings (Cu'91) recalls that there may also be a Barrabool House time capsule from the same year, so we are hopeful that this, and a possible Connewarre House time capsule, will be located also!
