Mechai Viravaidya (P'59)



Mechai was profiled by The New York Times in August, reflecting on his promotion of condoms and other contraceptives in Thailand in the 1970s.

Mechai was awarded the inaugural Geelong Grammar School Medal for Service to Society in 2014. “When I get other awards, they only know my work,” Mechai said at the time. “But here, at Geelong Grammar School, they know everything about me. I feel that this award is also for me as a person, which is a very great honour that I will cherish.”

Simon Fieldhouse (Cu'72)



Most commonly known for his work with watercolours and pen, Simon's latest exhibition showcasing a collection of sculptures opened at Maunsell Wickes on Thursday 20 October. Titled 'Whimsical Sculptures', Simon's latest exhibition features historical sculptures using new technology.

Sarah Harden (Vickers-Willis, A’89)



Sarah was guest speaker at the virtual OGG Business Lunch on Tuesday 18 October. Sarah, who is CEO of Hollywood production company Hello Sunshine that she started with actor Reese Witherspoon, was in conversation with Nina Thomas (Cl’93), Founder and Director of Harmonic Advisory. Sarah also delivered a keynote address for the Chief Executive Women (CEW) leadership summit in Melbourne last month and used both opportunities to discuss the importance of equality for women – Hello Sunshine tells stories in film, TV, print and podcasts from a female perspective. Sarah had to rush from the OGG Business Lunch to attend the premiere of Hello Sunshine’s new Netflix series, From Scratch, based on the critically acclaimed 2019 memoir of Tembi Locke. An avid reader actively involved in Reese’s Book Club, Sarah did have time to share some of her favourite new reads, including Celeste Ng’s Our Missing Hearts and Eve Rodski’s Unicorn Space.

Christian Lohberger (FB '94) and Stephen Minas (Glamorgan '93)



Christian Lohberger (FB '94) and Dr Stephen Minas (Glamorgan '93) recently has a mini-reunion at the United Nations environment headquarters in Bonn, Germany as they participated in UN climate negotiations as members of the UN Climate Technology Center Advisory Board.

Christian has been elected to sit on the advisory board of the United Nations top climate technology agency, the Climate Technology Center and Network (CTCN). The CTCN is responsible for determining the technology choices that are deployed to meet the Paris Agreement goals. Christian represents his birthplace of Papua New Guinea at UN climate conferences and has attended several of the COP summits as a negotiator. He joins Stephen, who currently represents Greece on the same advisory board. Christian and Stephen faced each other in intense negotiations at several UN climate conferences before discovering they went to school together after Christian saw Stephen in an issue of Light Blue

Brodie Murray (M'19)



Brodie is currently performing his new play, The Whisper, at Melbourne Fringe. Set against the racialised backdrop of 1940s Australia, a Ngarrindjeri family must make the impossible choice to leave home and country forever.

The Whisper is inspired by his grandmother, Lorraine, and elements of her family’s courageous journey to seek refuge on Wamba Wamba country. This work of historical fiction seeks to honour his family story and contribute to truth-telling around the stolen generations. 

Tanner Bruhn (Fr'20)



Tanner was traded from the GWS Giants to the 2022 premiership-winning Geelong Cats during the recent AFL Trade Period. After 30 games in his first two seasons with the Giants, Tanner requested a trade home to Geelong in September and eventually the deal was done in exchange for Pick 18 in November's Draft.

A number of Old Geelong Grammarians will be looking to find a new home in the AFL between now and the end of November. Jarrod Brander (M'17) was delisted by GWS after just one season in Sydney, having spent four seasons at the West Coast Eagles, while Nick Stevens (P'20) was delisted by Geelong after two seasons on their list. Devon Smith (A'11) announced his retirement in August after 11 seasons and 182 games across two clubs, GWS and Essendon.
