Michael Hickinbotham
(P’80)
One of Michael’s business enterprises, Australian Distilling Co., has recently earned the moniker of ‘Australia’s most awarded distillery’.

Australian Distilling Co.’s premium portfolio of destination gins and vodkas has now amassed more than 300 awards from the distilleries it has established in cities across Australia.

Recent awards include Adelaide Gin being named ‘world’s best gin’, taking out top honours at the prestigious International SIP Awards in the USA; and Australian Distilling Co. Shiraz Gin and Bondi Gin each receiving Platinum SIP awards. Australian Distilling Co.’s Tasmania Gin was named Best Gin at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in Hong Kong, with Australian Distilling Co. Vodka awarded Best Vodka.

David Beggs (M'84)
David was awarded the 2023 Gilruth Prize - the Australian Veterinary Association's most prestigious award - for his outstanding service to veterinary science in Australia.

David, an Associate Professor in the Melbourne Veterinary School, is dedicated to developing continuing education for veterinarians. He has contributed significantly to Australian Cattle Vets, convening their conferences, and editing journals and textbooks on cattle topics. He also convened the AVA Annual Conference for four years and the World Buiatrics Congress in 2014. David has published in over 27 peer-reviewed publications and conducted more than 25 veterinary conference presentations.

He is well-known in the field of animal welfare, completing a PhD focused on cattle welfare and representing the profession across multiple animal welfare forums. At the University of Melbourne, he teaches undergraduate veterinary students alongside supervising post-graduate veterinarians. He has also served on the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria for almost a decade.

John Teague (Cu’94)
John’s documentary, Belly of the Beast: A Torquay Story, premiered at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival in July.

The feature-length documentary tells the story of how the small coastal town of Torquay spawned a global surf industry, driven by the growth of surf companies Rip Curl and Quiksilver. John spent six years interviewing local surfers, using first-hand accounts to trace the history of Torquay and the evolution of surf culture; from the impact of Californian surfers demonstrating wave-riding on Malibu-style surfboards at an international surf lifesaving event that coincided with the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, to the beginnings of the local surfboard industry, the progression of the world’s longest running surfing competition at Bells Beach, and the global surf boom of the 1980s, which turned a cottage industry into one of Australia’s biggest commercial exports.

Georgie Cavanagh (Cl'03)
Carlotta + Gee is the French linen bedding side hustle which has now turned into a full-time gig for Georgie, which she runs from Sydney where she lives. A number of OGGs sleep in Carlotta + Gee sheets, which is lovely, while celebrities Matt Damon and Chris Hemsworth have given C + G their tick of approval.

Athina Hope (Magiafoglou, A'88) lives in Mansfield and has an incredible airbnb with C+G, which also stocks C+G. It is is nice to see the collaboration between them.

Current parent Fiona Moses lives and runs The Granary Richmond Hill in Tasmania, a well-loved and known homestead which is always booked out. They now have c+g linen thanks to the GGS connection.

Lucy McKendrick (He’09)
Lucy’s most recent short film, F*ck Me, Richard, premiered at the prestigious South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas, in March, and was subsequently selected to screen at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) in May. The film was also part of this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival.

Lucy wrote, co-directed and starred in the psychological thriller about a long-distance love affair, which was shot in New York and edited in Melbourne. F*ck Me, Richard was the only Australian film on the bill at SXSW and one of only 20 short films that screened at the festival from more than 10,000 submissions.

Emily Mannix (Fr'12)
Emily was recognised by the Melbourne Vixens supporters as their Fan MVP for the 2023 Super Netball season. Emily, who played her 100th game for the Vixens earlier this season, was outstanding in defence for Melbourne once again this year and played a pivotal role as they secured a top-four finish. Emily finished runner-up for this year's Sharelle McMahon Medal, the Vixens best and fairest award.  Allie Smith (A'17) was a member of the NSW Swifts side who finished the Super Netball season as beaten grand finalists, losing in added time to the Adelaide Thunderbirds. Allie missed the finals series due to injury.

Lauren Ryan (Cl’16)
Lauren represented Australia at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest this month, finishing in 18th place in her heat for the Women’s 5000m event. Lauren ran a very aggressive race, making an early move to put herself in the race. "I took the risk and it didn't pay off, but I know one day it will," she said post-race.

Lauren has enjoyed an outstanding season on the US athletics circuit, recording personal best times in each of the 3000m, 5000m and 10000m events since the beginning of March this year.

Mia Gross (Fr’19)
While Mia missed selection for this year’s World Athletics Championships as she recovered from injury, she was a member of the 4x100m relay team at last year’s Commonwealth Games. Mia ran in the heats and the Australian team ultimately finished fourth in the final, narrowly behind Jamaica. News broke in July 2023 that Nigeria, winners of the 4x100m gold medal, had been disqualified due to one of their runners returning a positive test for a banned substance, elevating Australia to third place and delivering Mia and her teammates a bronze medal.
