News of Richard Marles (P'84), Tarryn Love (A'17) and the members of new band "Aphrasia"  feature this month. There is also a small handful of OGG in the AFL either on the move or rumoured to be on the move as trade week draws to a close.

Richard Marles (P'84)

Richard Marles was guest speaker at the School’s Leavers’ Celebration Ceremony on Sunday 15 October. Due to the disruptions of the pandemic, it was the first time the School had welcomed a guest speaker to the Year 12 speeches and prizing giving ceremony since Roland Wu (P’93) was guest speaker in 2019. Richard has served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence since 2022. He started his Geelong Grammar School (GGS) journey in Year 1 at Bostock House in 1973 and graduated in 1984 as House Captain of Perry House. Whilst most sources trace the beginning of Richard’s political journey to when he joined the Melbourne University Labor Club in his first week of university, others recall his active role in Debating at GGS and his parts in several plays, especially Godspell and West Side Story

Bart Thatphithakkul (M'15), Andrew Nicholson (M'15), Nick Holberton (P'15), Justice Nicholson (He’17) and Charlotte Nicholson (Yr12 He)

Aphrasia, featuring Andrew, Bart, Charlotte, Justice and Nick, released their debut album in late August. Fueled by their love for classic pop rock, they crafted an album that echoes the spirit of legendary acts from yesteryear, they added their unique touch, creating a sound that's both timeless and fresh. Tarryn Love (A'17)

Tarryn recently completed a six-week Artist Residency at the Blue Cabin, a mobile artist residency located in Vancouver British Columbia on Canada’s Pacific Coast. The Blue Cabin was built in 1927 as a floating home by a Norwegian carpenter and shipbuilder. Located on the foreshore in the City of Richmond, the Blue Cabin provides a home base for visiting artists, with accommodation and studio facilities. Tarryn’s residency, from September-October 16, was part of a residency exchange facilitated by Footscray Community Arts, providing residency and community engagement opportunities for two Indigenous artists – Tarryn traded places with Atheana Picha, a Salish artist from the Kwantlen First Nation. A proud Gunditjmara Keerray Woorroong artist, Tarryn’s recent work has included wrapping the walls and panels of The Story House theatre at the newly opened Geelong Arts Centre. The work spans approximately 500 custom made panels that cover approximately 1,600 square metres of space, representative of yoowak (the night), encompassing three thematic layers: kakatheereeng, meenkeel, wootyook (the stars), tanteen tyamoorn (the Milky Way), and alam meen (Ancestors wrapped in their Possum Skin Cloaks).

Paddy Dow (M'17), Ollie Lord (M'20), Paddy McCartin (Fr'14) and Lochie O'Brien (P'17)

Paddy Dow has made the move to St Kilda during the AFL trade period after 73 games across six seasons with Carlton. Fellow Blue Lochie O'Brien was delisted by Carlton in late-September, having been selected in the same draft as Paddy in 2017. Lochie played 66 games for the Blues and remains hopeful of getting a chance elsewhere in 2024. Paddy McCartin announced his retirement from the AFL in August, having spent the past two seasons with the Sydney Swans. Paddy has had a number of serious and well-documented cases of concussion during his football career, leading him to take a break from the game in 2019 and playing a major role in his retirement decision this year.

Ollie Lord was the subject of media speculation about a possible move to Geelong during the AFL Trade period. An emerging key forward, Ollie made his debut for Port Adelaide in 2023 and has played 13 games for the Power. He enjoyed a breakout game in Port Adelaide’s qualifying final loss to Brisbane, kicking four goals and attracting his first votes in Port’s player of the round award. Ollie was Co-Captain of Football at GGS with Tanner Bruhn (Fr’20), who was traded from GWS to Geelong in 2022. Ollie comes from a family of “die-hard” Geelong supporters with strong connections to the Cats. Ollie’s father Darren (M’89) was on Geelong’s playing list for two years and his grandfather Alistair Lord played 122 games for the Cats, winning the 1962 Brownlow Medal and playing in the 1963 Premiership team.
